Far, Far From Ypres

About Far, Far From Ypres

Based on a Greentrax double album of WW1 songs, “Far, Far From Ypres”, Ian McCalman wrote the script, linking the album’s songs, and transferring the story to “the stage”, where the audience follows a young Scot’s terrifying journey to the Ypres trenches and back. His triumphs and disasters are illustrated, musically, by 35 recruiting, training, marching, trench, Music Hall songs and poems of the time. This highly acclaimed production filled the Glasgow Concert Hall, receiving a prolonged standing ovation, and described by the Festival Director as “brilliant”. Since then it has gone from strength to strength. The production shows large screen projection of photographs and images, throughout, and features a cast of 26 “folk singing stars”, including Barbara Dickson, Siobhan Miller, Dick Gaughan, Sangsters, Ian Bruce, Gary West and Ian McCalman, singing the songs of WW1, superbly linked by narrator, Iain Anderson. N.B. Possible cast changes for some shows. “Powerfully reminds us of the horrors of war and the individuals and communities touched by it”. (STV).

Acclaimed production of WW1 songs, poems and stories, following the terrifying journey of a Scot to “the trenches” and back. This production features many of the finest Scottish traditional singers and has received standing ovations throughout its triumphant Scottish tour.

“It was a beautifully crafted show and there should be some way of letting everyone in the world experience it. Come back anytime” Donald Shaw Director of Celtic Connections.

“Far, far from Ypres was a fitting memorial to the Scottish contribution in the First World War, and without being overtly political, it powerfully reminds us of the horrors of war and the individuals and communities touched by it. Thank you Celtic Connections for taking this project on board – the sell-out audience showed their appreciation with a standing ovation”. STV online

“A standing ovation raised the roof of the Queen’s Hall for several minutes after the show had finished. It was a stirring end to a night honouring a terrible tragedy, one that left the entire audience moved and sombre, but strangely elated” Broadway Baby
