Did you know that some Victorian asylums also functioned as publishing houses? In the nineteenth century, many mental institutions purchased printing presses and encouraged patients to publish their writing. As a result, patients' magazines, newspapers and poetry collections were produced and read within and beyond the walls of the asylums.
Join us at the Pathfoot Press to learn more about the fascinating history of these publications and help us spread awareness of mental illness by printing a poem by a forgotten nineteenth-century sufferer - Scottish printer and poet Alexander Smart.
The workshop will consist of a short talk and a practical exercise in typesetting and printing. The talk, delivered by Mila Daskalova, will introduce you to the history of publishing in asylums and the fascinating life of Alexander Smart. Then, under the guidance of Dr Kelsey Williams and the Pathfoot Press staff, you will have a go at composing type yourself! Together, we will typeset and print Smart's poem 'Never Despair' (1857), using an authentic nineteenth-century Columbian press. You will be able to take away a copy as a souvenir.
Tickets are free, but booking is essential through website link above.
Location: Pathfoot Press, C7B Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 4LA
