Love Bound + Imogen

About Love Bound + Imogen

Two raw and compelling documentaries highlighting the challenges parents and families face in supporting young people with severe mental illness, both award-winners at SMHAF 2021.

In Imogen, a family grieves, celebrates and reflects on their daughter’s life, whose mental health challenges changed the course of her life and everyone around her. Love Bound, filmed in an otherwise silent therapy room, follows five parents in their struggles to support adult children with mental illness.

Join us for a Zoom Q&A, with guests including Love Bound director Vibe Mogensen, psychiatrist Lene Karlsson, and subjects Marianne and Tommy, at 8pm on Friday 21 May.

Love Bound, Vibe Mogensen, Denmark, 52m, European Premiere
Winner of the Mid-Length Documentary award at SMHAF 2021

Mental illness is Denmark’s primary health concern, but the congested system has little room to support parents of young people living with severe and enduring conditions.

Filmed in an otherwise silent therapy room, this documentary follows five parents as they struggle to take care of their adult children and come to terms with the insecurity that loving them can bring.

Addressing difficult and complex issues, this unique documentary poses important questions about how we can build a mental health system that better supports young people and their families.

Content notes: strong discussion of self-harm, discussion of suicide attempts, discussion of drug use

Imogen, Lola Young & Matt Shea, UK, 32m, Scottish Premiere
Winner of the Anti-Stigma award at SMHAF 2021

A family grieves, celebrates and reflects on their daughter’s life, whose mental health challenges changed the course of her life and everyone around her.

Crafted from two decades of journals, sketchbooks and music she left behind, with family members and actors appearing together, seamlessly blending reality and performance of self.

Filmmakers join a family who posthumously try to understand a chaotic mind, with the aim to expand our own understanding of what it’s like to live in a state of mental confusion.

Content notes: discussion of drug use, discussion of eating disorders, representation of self-harm, strong discussion of suicide.
