These workshops will look at various technical and expressive skills that go in to painting and abstracting a landscape, and developing your own creative voice. Work will be guided by reference photos, to explore our favourite locations, and remind us of the moments we spent there - translating this into mark, texture and colour to capture a sense of place.
Each workshop focuses on experimentation and research, guiding you through drawing exercises and sketchbook work, developing at the end of each session to a larger work on paper.
The classes are designed to work individually, or as a series. Workshop Four will combine our skills in the final class to create a painting on wooden panel.
Workshop Outlines:
Class 1: Mark-Making (18th August)
In this workshop we will focus on mark making, exploring various traditional and experimental ways of creating line, with unexpected tools and drawing exercises.
Class 2: Colour (25th August)
In this workshop, we will delve into the world of intuitive colour and colour mixing - Developing colour palettes derived from our reference photos, as well as memories of landscape.
Class 3: Composition (1st September)
In this workshop, we will explore balance, proportion and various processes to create both realistic and abstracted compositions.
Class 4: Painting the Landscape (8th September)
In this final workshop, we will run through the full process of creating a landscape painting; from research and development, through to the creation of a final piece on wooden panel.
In each class, participants can expect to complete a loose-leaf sketchbook and several developed drawings. These classes are very open and relaxed: made for all levels (including those who do not consider themselves artists!) and look to celebrate mistakes in order to develop and free up our work.
