About Doors Open Days - East Lothian

That’s the magic of Doors Open Days; you can be a tourist in your own town or discover a new place entirely – including some buildings and spaces not normally open to the public.

Don’t miss this annual opportunity to see inside some of the most interesting places that East Lothian has to offer.

Amisfield Walled Garden - 23-24 September 2023
Amisfield Walled Garden dates from 1783 and forms part of the policies of Amisfield House, a Palladian mansion that was demolished in the 1920’s. The garden is 8 acres in size and the ornamental pavilions in each corner and derelict bothies outside the walls are A-listed for their historical importance.

Chalmers Memorial Church - 23 September 2023
The A-listed Church building is virtually as it was on opening day 1 April 1905 with many of the original arts and crafts features still in use. The church adopted the title Chalmers Memorial at the time of the Church of Scotland re-union in 1929.

Dunbar Town House Museum and Gallery - 23-24 September 2023
The Dunbar Town House Museum & Gallery is one of Dunbar's oldest buildings and the perfect place to begin a visit to the town. With its distinctive witch's hat tower and its bell, clock and sun dials the Town House has been the focus of town life since the 16th century. Our friendly staff are always on hand to tell you about the town, the surrounding area and bring the history of the building to life. The building is also home to a museum and gallery with changing historical and art exhibitions.

National Museum of Flight - 23-245 September 2023
The National Museum of Flight is home to one of Europe’s best collections of aircraft, including Scotland’s Concorde. Learn about the history of aviation from the First World War to the present day and immerse yourself in our interactive exhibitions, supersonic experiences, historic hangars and airfield.

Prestongrange Museum - 23-245 September 2023
Explore mighty Prestongrange, a former hive of industry that employed thousands and revel in its tranquillity today. Prestongrange is a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a 16th century harbour, a 17th century glass works, 18th and 19th century potteries and a 19th/20th century colliery and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can still be seen, and many of the structures are still intact including the rare Hoffman Kiln and the Cornish Beam Engine which is unique in Scotland.

St Mary's Parish Church - 23-24 September 2023
14th century St Mary’s, has cathedral proportions and is 206 feet long. By 1549, it was roofless and ruined with pock-marked walls from musket/ cannon fire during the Siege of Haddington. The town could only afford to repair the west end which was reroofed and repaired to allow services to be held. A huge barrier wall hid the ruined, forlorn east end.It stayed that way for over 400 years until a huge scheme allowed a complete restoration; by 1973, the church was again whole!
