Stirling Doors Open Days - Cowane’s Hospital

About Stirling Doors Open Days - Cowane’s Hospital

Access to the building, self-led walk & digital DOD presentations

‘Established in 1637, Cowane’s Hospital Trust is Scotland’s second oldest surviving charitable trust. The Trust has recently undertaken a major project to conserve the historic fabric of Category A Listed Cowane’s Hospital, including harling and lime washing the external walls and repairs to the roof, windows, doors, and stonework. The stained glass windows have been conserved and the exquisite external lanterns restored. The statue of John Cowane, affectionately known as ‘Auld Staneybreeks’, has been painstakingly conserved and once again takes pride of place over the entrance to the building.

At the heart of the Hospital Building, within the Main Hall, visitors will find a free exhibition celebrating the history of both John Cowane and the building. The exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the life of Stirling’s best-known philanthropist and how upon his death, he left money to build an ‘almshous’. The exhibition goes on to display the Building and how life would be for its residents. The exhibition informs the visitor of the Guildry and the important role that they played in John’s Cowane’s life, being a successful merchant.

Visitors can then leave the building and take the John Cowane’s Trail, visiting his grave, his memorial within the Church of the Holy Rude opposite the Hospital Building, and then onto John Cowane’s house, as you walk down St Mary’s Wynd.’
