Join writer and psychologist Scherezade Siobhan, our Charles Wallace Fellow, for an exciting workshop which will explore poetry can be used as a therapeutic tool. This free workshop is open to staff, students, and visitors to the University.
A word from Scherezade,
Psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan once said that the unconscious is structured in language. Writer Hélène Cixous wrote “I do believe in poetry. I believe that there are creatures endowed with the power to put things together and bring them back to life”. Living in a world that is punctuated by triggers and stressors that adversely affect our mental and emotional wellness, we are all in need of anchoring from time to time. Art therapy evolved to help us explore and understand ourselves in tender, non-pathological and creative ways. While often the focus of art therapy tends to be purely visual or physical arts, in recent times, creative writing has emerged as a viable contender for therapeutic method of self-awareness. Poetry can afford us with fearlessness to go beyond our regular psychological conditioning and give us room to encounter the unsaid, explore our feelings and our connections to self as well as others. Poems could become our empathic witnesses as well as our trusty vessels to pour out our feelings.
In this workshop, we will explore poetic genres and create a collaborative togetherness through writing and sharing poems as extension of what can be considered therapeutic for our collective wellbeing.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
