Level: Experienced (Intermediate and above)
To coincide with Dunblane’s Ecofest 2026, CSSJ is delighted to host an Eco Metals Masterclass for experienced jewellery makers.
This one-day masterclass explores practical and sustainable ways to recycle precious metals within your own studio practice.
Participants will be guided through the process of melting down precious metals such as gold and silver and transforming them into beautifully cast pieces using straightforward tools and equipment.
The day begins with learning how to identify suitable metals for recycling, followed by demonstrations of safe and effective melting techniques. You will explore a range of re-forming methods, including granulation, sand casting, and water casting, as well as how to create ingots that can be drawn into wire or rolled into sheet. Along the way, tutors will share expert guidance on impurities, metal behaviour, melting equipment, and techniques to help you get the best results from old or scrap metal.
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a unique cast ring made from their own recycled metal, a selection of experimental samples, and the skills and confidence needed to begin recycling precious metals independently in their own jewellery studios.
This workshop is suitable for experienced jewellery makers at an intermediate level and above. Participants must have torch experience and be confident using a large Sievert gas torch. This is a skills- and samples-focused masterclass designed for jewellers who are able to translate advanced techniques into their own professional practice. Silver is not included, but participants are invited to bring their own clean metal scraps from their workshops or old hallmarked jewellery suitable for melting down. No chains, please. More information on what metal to bring to the workshop will be issued nearer the time.
What to bring:
Please bring along glasses if you need them
Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a studio environment, including closed-toe shoes. Why not order yourself a CSSJ apron to make you feel right at home in your workshop?
If you have long hair, please wear it up
If you are the type of person who prefers to arm yourself with some knowledge ahead of time, then we have prepared a Pinterest page filled with jewellery-making information and eco-casting inspiration just for you!
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Please bring your own lidded cup for use in the studio. While we do not have a dedicated lunch area, you are welcome to eat at your desk, and we can also recommend nearby places to eat if you prefer.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
