"This programme traces the many ways composers across the centuries have expressed hope, through praise, through contemplation, through love, and through new artistic voices.
From Bach’s jubilant “Lobet den Herrn”, hope expressed in praise, and Haydn’s radiant “Little Organ Mass,” where hope is rooted in faith and ritual, we move into the modern world with Eric Whitacre’s luminous Hebrew Love Songs, where we find hope found in love and human relationships, and Ola Gjeilo’s “Ubi Caritas” where hope is expressed through the reassurance of God’s presence.
The programme culminates in the first performance of a newly composed work that brings this historical conversation nearer the present, through the words of the American poet, Emily Dickinson, reminding us that hope remains one of humanity’s most enduring sources of inspiration.
Though spanning 300 years, these works share an intimate scale, a commitment to text, and a belief in music’s power to lift the spirit."
