Remembered Exhibition Closing Ceremony

About Remembered Exhibition Closing Ceremony

We'll hear from writer Fiona Leith and Dr Alex Davey as they discuss the resilience and hopefulness of plants, in tribute to those that survived the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima 80 years ago.

Event Schedule:

Guests are welcome to explore the Remembered: 80 years since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki exhibition from 9am until 5pm.

1pm: A welcome to the ceremony from University staff

In Conversation - Planting for Peace:

Host Fiona Leith, writer for The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, currently researching a book about the 19th century blossoming of Scotland and Japan’s love affair, will be joined by guest Dr Alex Davey, Deputy Director of Science (Research) at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, author of World of Plants: Stories of Survival, a book exploring 100 plants that are among the world’s rarest and most threatened.

They will discuss the power of plants in people's lives, Alex's recent visit to Hiroshima, and how nature can not only restore itself but also our own faith in the future.

A Pledge to Uphold Peace - from the University of Stirling Chaplaincy

Origami Crane Installation - Together, guests will be welcomed to join us in hanging paper cranes, created by visitors to the exhibition, from an oak tree on the campus to create a temporary installation reflecting the Japanese belief that cranes symbolise longevity, happiness and good fortune.

Poem by Laura T Fyfe - To close the event, we will hear a newly commissioned poem from former Makar, Laura T Fyfe.
