WHO REALLY WAS DON ROBERTO?
Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936, known throughout his life as Don Roberto), is best known as co-founder, with Keir Hardie, of the Scottish Labour Party, forerunner of the modern Labour Party; and later as honorary founding president of the Scottish National Party.
A passionate campaigner for social justice, Don Roberto advocated abolition of the House of Lords, declared himself the first socialist member of parliament, and was imprisoned for rioting. But that’s only part of the extraordinary story of the 10th laird of Gartmore – a man whose life GB Shaw considered “an achievement so fantastic that it would never be believed in a romance.”
As a young man in Argentina Don Roberto became an expert horseman and rode with gauchos. In middle age he went searching for Roman gold in northern Spain and was held to ransom by a warlord in the Atlas Mountains.
An inveterate traveller, much-admired writer, champion of the oppressed, and above all a great humanitarian he was a true visionary, far ahead of his time. Almost everything he stood for still rings loudly today.
But who really was he? Who was the man behind the stories? And why has he been forgotten – better known today in Argentina than in his native Scotland?
The event will be hosted by James Jauncey is a Perthshire-based writer and Don Roberto’s great-great-nephew.
Come and hear the remarkable story of one of the most important and influential figures in Scottish History.
