Celebrating the purifying and rising energy of the new season with the beautiful birch tree, associated fungi & creating birch besoms.
The first forage of the year usually starts with the elegant birch tree and its rising sap, as the new pulse of the season starts to kick in before much else is going underfoot. There is around a 2-week window in central Scotland where conditions are perfect to sustainably harvest this refreshing and cleansing drink!
Join naturalist and forager Lauren Lochrie of Herbal Homestead to find out when and what to look out for, how to harvest and use birch sap, whilst exploring this multifunctional tree and its uses - including its associated , medicinal mushrooms.
Participants will also gather birch brash and branches (often strewn on the forest floor over winter) to create a traditional, blessed besom (broomstick), a symbol of purification and clearing out the old to let in the new!
What to expect:
- Birch tree & associated fungi identification and habitat cues
- Exploring their traditional and modern uses
- Learning how to tap birch tree sap using the less invasive branch method
- Listening to the rising sap using a stethoscope
- Trying birch sap & medicinal mushroom tea
- Gathering birch branches and twigs to create a blessed besom (broomstick)
- Exercises on how to connect with trees and fungi
- A warm workshop space to craft in (hot drinks & biscuits provided)
- Follow up recipes and information will be provided so just come along and enjoy the afternoon!
