Rooted in the textures and rhythms of the Scottish landscape, Strawbridge’s oil paintings offer an intimate view of wild animals - capturing fleeting moments of stillness, vitality and quiet reflection. Working instinctively and often completing paintings in a single sitting, her use of alla prima technique lends the work a sense of immediacy and presence.
Rather than depicting animals as symbols, Strawbridge invites viewers to consider them as individual beings - and to reflect on what the natural world has to offer when we slow down enough to truly observe.
“Painting is my way of paying attention, and I’m drawn to quiet moments in the wild.” says Charlotte Strawbridge. “Encounters with animals make me feel grateful, connected, and wholly present. When Beasts Spoke invites you to pause and consider the world through non-human eyes. It’s a celebration of the gentle lessons offered to us by Nature, if only we take the time to listen.”
Alongside the exhibition, visitors can take part in a programme of events including palette knife oil painting workshops, a children’s writing competition (inviting visitors to write a short story for a painted “Squirrel”, with a prize of the original artwork for the winner), and the launch of Strawbridge’s illustrated art book, When Beasts Spoke, featuring visual stories inspired by the perspectives and quiet wisdom of the animals she paints.
Opening Night takes place on Friday 27 March (6pm–9pm) at Made in Stirling.
