Conspiracy theories have always been with us. Down through the ages, whenever there has been fear or social unrest, people have turned to conspiracy theories in their efforts to make sense of things. That not only remains true today, but modern means of communication spread theories faster, further and 'louder', increasing the support they get and the impact they have. This talk aims to provide you with context and insight into the phenomenon and the threat it poses today. In the light of warnings by the Heads of the Army and MI6 that the UK is on the brink of war, the talk is timely; an understanding of conspiracy theories and the role they play in public and private discourse is crucial to protecting the nation.
The Speaker: Gary Dunnagan is a former Captain in the Intelligence Corps and Detective Superintendent in Counter Terrorism Policing. He spent over 30 years working in intelligence and investigation roles across the world. In 2019 he became a senior lecturer in counter-terrorism at the University of Lancashire. He returned to live in Stirling in 2023. Those who have heard him talking before will know that he is a very well-informed and entertaining speaker. Don't miss this opportunity to hear him, and learn about the wacky but troubling world of conspiracy theories.
Cost: Donations to SSAFA are requested at the event on the day. Entry to Stirling Castle is free for those attending the talk.
Booking Places: Please contact the SSAFA Forth Valley Branch Secretary, Sandie Welham (sandie.welham@forthvalley.ssafa.org.uk; 01786 479541) before Thursday 16 April 2026.
