Dunblane’s Rubber Chicken Theatre picked up not one but two awards at Musical Theatre International’s Junior Theatre Festival in Birmingham on Sunday.
Their electric performance of songs and scenes from Matilda The Musical Jr. saw the talented troop pick up the trophy for Achievement in Music, as well an Outstanding Individual Performance Award for Kirsty Morrison’s portrayal of Miss Trunchbull.
Kirsty said: “This award isn’t only for me. It goes to every single member of our performing arts family because there is absolutely no way I could have achieved what I did without everyone’s help, support, encouragement and love. I wish we could have bottled the energy that was coming out of every single cast member performing on Sunday because it was a feeling like no other. Everybody gave their absolute all to this performance and we could not have asked for a better experience. This group never fails to make me proud. Proud of the kids, proud of the adults and proud to call myself a member of Rubber Chicken Theatre.”
This is the second time Rubber Chicken Theatre have won an award at the Junior Theatre Festival. In 2019 they picked up an award recognising their commitment to working together as one.
Artistic Director Pamela Mackie said: “We went into this year unsure about what to expect, with a brand-new Jr. show, a whole new cast and off the back of just three rehearsals, one of which was on Zoom. We travelled half-way across the country and on just a few hours sleep rocked up at the Birmingham International Convention Centre full of smiles and laughter.
“Performance time soon followed. As the adults nervously sat back and watched, the cast rose to the occasion and sung their hearts out. Every single word, every single note, from start to finish was attacked and performed with 100% ‘oomph’. The energy in the room was absolutely electrifying.”
Now back in Dunblane, Rubber Chicken Theatre are straight into rehearsals for their winter season. Upcoming shows include All Together Now, a performance of songs from Broadway (12-13 November), their Christmas pantomime Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood (7-11 December) and Legally Blonde Jr (29-30 December).
