GIVE A DOG A BONE SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
A unique charity which provides animal companionship for older people is the only Scottish organisation in the running for a top award.
The team face competition from Somerset-based Secret World Wildlife Rescue and Southampton City Farm at the awards ceremony in Telford, Shropshire next Tuesday May 16.
Louise Russell, founder of Give a Dog a Bone, is delighted she and her team of nine part-time workers have been named finalists.
She said: “We are a small team who deliver a really big service tackling loneliness for older adults through animal companionship and friendship and we all work hard to make a difference every day.
“We had 12,500 visitors through our doors last year and we support three distinct geographical areas across Scotland at Troon, Alloa and Shawlands in Glasgow.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to take the concept of what we deliver through Give a Dog a Bone to a new audience and to fly the flag for Scotland.
“We are proud to be the only Scottish charity shortlisted for any of the Animal Charity awards and it’s a wonderful recognition for us all.
“Regardless of the outcome next week, we are pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate everyone who works with us as we come together for a great team building experience at the awards ceremony.”
Give a Dog a Bone, which was founded in 2013, helps people aged 60+ afford to home a rescue pet.
It also runs community schemes – in Shawlands, Troon and Alloa – providing free activities and a team of companionship dogs allowing those who love animals to spend time with them.
The Animal Charity Awards are an annual celebration of the work carried out by charities across the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands.
Bella von Mesterhazy, Sales and Marketing director for Petplan, said: “Through our partnership with over 1,200 animal charities, we see every day the difference teams and individuals make to the lives of animals.
“The Petplan and ADCH Animal Charity Awards are a time to show our appreciation and give these remarkable finalists the recognition they deserve.”
Last year, Louise won the Pride of Scotland Community Hero award after setting up the charity to address two issues close to her heart - animal welfare and isolation in older people.
She came up with the idea of combating loneliness in the over-60s by removing some of the financial barriers faced by those seeking to adopt a rescue pet and launched Give a Dog a Bone in November 2013.
The charity works by offering those who need it financial support towards the rehoming fee of a rescue animal and ongoing help with insurance costs.
It also runs community spaces which include a Pet Food Bank for those who struggle to feed their pet plus free activities for the over 60s including Group Dog Walks, Reflexology, Chair Yoga, Art Clubs and Singing for Wellbeing.
And those who come along can also spend time with the charity’s friendly team of companionship dogs.
