They are organising a series of litter-picking sessions with the first one, jointly hosted with local archaeologist Dr Murray Cook, taking place next Saturday May 11.

Business owners and residents are invited to join their efforts and the first clean-up will focus on Stirling’s historic Back Walk which was built between 1724 and 1791 and follows the outline of the old city walls.

During the session, Dr Cook will talk about the historical significance of the Back Walk which is the oldest publicly maintained road in Scotland.

He said: “We’re going to be doing a mix of litter picking and talking about the history and landscape of the Back Walk as we make our way from the city centre up to Stirling Castle.

“Tidying the area is something which is important and needs to be done periodically as the Back Walk is one of Stirling’s major attractions and as such it ought to be as well looked after as possible. Hopefully, we can build up a good head of steam and get into a regular habit of picking litter.

“We’ll meet at the Carving of the Wolf at 10am on Saturday and take it from there and we welcome anyone who can come along and help.”

Go Forth Stirling’s Street Ambassadors Gail Lamb and Josie Brown, who aim to inspire civic pride by regularly removing graffiti and litter around the city, will be attending the litter-pick and supplying disposable gloves, bin bags and litter grabbers.

Danielle McRorie-Smith, Project Director at Go Forth Stirling BID, said: “Ensuring Stirling is a clean and welcoming destination for visitors is an important part of our remit and a key concern of the business community.

“We’re always keen to get involved in community events like litter picking and hope as many people as possible will join our Street Ambassadors and Dr Cook on Saturday and help enhance Stirling’s environment for everyone.”

Further efforts from Go Forth to improve Stirling’s streetscape include investing in vibrant planters which add a welcome splash of colour to the city centre each year.

The floral arrangements and planters can be found across the city in Station Road, Murray Place, Pitt Terrace and Melville Terrace and include four large perennial-filled planters on Station Road Square featuring pollinator friendly native species which promote biodiversity.

The BID is also drawing up a long-term action plan, with city partners, to further improve Stirling’s environment following the commissioning of a detailed waste and litter audit conducted by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Saturday’s litter-pick will run from 10am until around midday and anyone who can help should meet at the start of the Back Walk trail, just off Corn Exchange Road, which is marked by the timber carving of a wolf.

Go Forth Stirling is the city’s BID (Business Improvement District) representing more than 600 business owners with a key objective of increasing visitors to the city and devising initiatives to help make it a more welcoming destination for businesses and shoppers.
