Bike Library Shifts into High Gear with Soaring Bookings
A local charity’s free bike library has experienced a huge surge in popularity following the launch of a new online booking system.

Since FEL introduced its new streamlined service in September their bike library has facilitated 140 e-bike loans, nearly three times as many as during the same period last year.
Project Co-ordinator Ryan Flaherty said: “Even the unpredictable Scottish summer weather has not deterred users, with the library seeing consistent bookings regardless of the forecast.”
The charity’s bike library – which includes a fleet of 100 e-bikes, as well as 8 cargo bikes and 2 smoothie bikes – allows users to borrow wheels for 3-4 weeks at a time, up to three times a year.
The initiative has proven popular, particularly among the 35-44 and 55-64 age groups, with more women than men taking advantage of the charity’s free service.
Ryan explained: "The new booking system has not only increased accessibility but also provided valuable insights into user demographics and preferences.
“The feedback we've received has been overwhelmingly positive, with many borrowers now considering buying an e-bike of their own.
“We’re especially pleased to offer this service to those who find the cost of ownership prohibitive, making active travel a more accessible option for everyone."
The charity puts the success of their bike library down to growing interest in sustainable transport.
Ryan said: “By offering free access to a range of different e-bikes, we’re making it easier for people to switch to this eco-friendly way of getting around without the high cost.
“E-bikes are usually pricier than regular bikes and it’s a big investment for most people.
“The bike library is also great for anyone thinking about buying an e-bike because it lets them try out different models first, so they can find the right fit without the risk.”
