With the frequency and variety of weather events increasing at this time of year, the council’s priority is keeping Stirling’s communities safe and moving when these happen, ensuring that people can travel, access services and stay connected.
The council’s road service, which is responsible for maintaining more than 1000km of roads and over 600km of paths and cycleways, has invested in a new fleet of gritting vehicles that will support this vital work.
A total of 7,000 tonnes of salt is available for gritting across the network 24/7 during periods of snow and ice to keep road users and pedestrians safe.
Priority will continue to be given to treating main routes to key locations including schools, hospitals, railway stations, shops and health clinics. Residents can see where gritters are operating on the council’s live gritting map.
Almost 550 grit bins are in place in communities across Stirling to help residents clear local paths and roads. These will be replenished over the winter with crews on hand to treat priority paths with mini tractors.
The winter Duty Room has been stood up where experienced, specially-trained staff monitor real-time information from multiple weather stations positioned across the area, with a meteorologist on call 24/7 to deliver forecasts to inform operations.
Drains have been being cleared at known hot spots to help drainage systems cope with heavy rain with plans in place to deal with flooding and other extreme weather events.
Convener of the Council’s Environment, Transport and Net Zero Committee, Cllr Alasdair Tollemache said: “Teams across the council have been preparing for winter for many months and we will do all we can to keep people safe and support our communities during challenging conditions.
“We are committed to keep our roads and paths clear and accessible, supported by a new fleet of gritting vehicles and significant supplies of salt, with salt bins refilled as often as possible.
“Winter just doesn’t bring snow and ice, however, and we have also taken steps to build our resilience to respond proactively and reactively to other extreme weather events, including heavy rain and strong winds.”
Residents and businesses are also being encouraged to make their own preparations for the winter months whether that’s taking steps to avoid frozen pipes, deal with power cuts or knowing what to do during flooding.
Resources and advice on these topics are available on the Ready Scotland website, while the council website also has more information about its winter service programme and flooding.
Residents can also sign-up to the Community Winter Volunteers programme. This supports the many residents across Stirling who generously clear snow or spread salt along footways and paths in their neighbourhoods on behalf of others, by providing them with training and equipment such as high-vis waistcoats, gloves, hats, snow shovels and grit spreaders.
Cllr Tollemache said: “We are also asking residents and businesses to be winter ready, as by working together, we can help to keep Stirling moving, look after each other and support our communities.
“Now is the time to get an emergency kit for your home, make sure your pipes are properly insulated and know where to go for important information and updates.
“Plan ahead when travelling, check the weather conditions and follow the guidance from key agencies such as the Met Office, SEPA, Police Scotland and Transport Scotland.”
