A special edition beer, crafted in honour of the legendary rugby player Doddie Weir, has launched across Aldi Scotland stores.
Brewed by Aldi supplier Cold Town Beer in collaboration with the late Scotland international and Motor Neuron Disease (MND) campaigner Doddie Weir himself, Doddie Beir pays tribute to a man whose impact extended far beyond the rugby pitch. It celebrates not only his formidable career in sport, but also his relentless determination off the field in raising awareness and funds for MND research.
A 440ml can of Doddie Beir will be available at Aldi’s everyday amazing prices for just £1.95 across all 112 Aldi Scotland stores. It will be the only supermarket in Scotland to stock the product, and launches ahead of the Six Nations, giving rugby fans the chance to raise a glass at home, knowing that every can bought helps support an important cause.
Doddie was personally involved in brewing this special lager in 2019. Crafted with character and heart, Doddie Beir is a lasting tribute to his larger-than-life personality and his refusal to give up the fight. At 4.3%, and in line with Doddie’s own taste, the beer is a slightly bitter lager with the clean, crisp finish of a classic Pilsner.
Cold Town Beer has been a proud charitable partner of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation for over five years, pledging a minimum donation of £11,000 per annum to support the Foundation’s vital work, helping to drive forward its search for a cure for MND.
Alongside the specially created Doddie Beir edition, Cold Town Beer is also launching a new Hazy Cold IPA, exclusive to Aldi. Also available from 12 January, it will retail for just £1.95 for 440ml.
Elliot Lamb, Head of Sales at Cold Town Beer said: “We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Aldi to launch Doddie Beir across Scotland. This beer was created to honour the legacy of Doddie Weir - not only as a rugby legend, but as someone whose courage, humour and determination inspired people far beyond the sport.
“From the outset, there has been a real synergy between our two businesses. Both Cold Town Beer and Aldi share a passion for quality, innovation and delivering outstanding products that resonate with customers. Alongside Doddie Beir, we’re also delighted to have our Hazy Cold IPA on shelf as an Aldi exclusive, further underlining the strength of the partnership.
“Working closely with Aldi to bring Doddie Beir in-store has been a genuinely collaborative process, and their support has allowed us to bring our beers with real purpose to customers across Scotland.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to continue building on this relationship, with further listings planned throughout 2026.”
Cold Town Beer is one of more than 90 Scottish suppliers who help to stock Aldi shelves with quality, locally produced food and drink. It has partnered with Aldi since 2021 and a regular spotlight supplier in its seasonal beer festivals.
Alan Leslie, Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, said: “It is a genuine privilege to bring this exceptional, specially created craft beer to customers across Scotland. Doddie Weir is one of our nation’s greatest sporting legends, and his Foundation has played a powerful role in raising awareness and generating vital funds in the fight against MND.
“Cold Town Beer’s innovation in creating this product is a true testament to their creativity, craftsmanship and expertise within the craft beer industry.
“We are proud to support this meaningful collaboration which allows our customers to enjoy this beer in the knowledge that proceeds will be donated to My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.”
Doddie set up My Name’5 Doddie Foundation in 2017 following his diagnosis with MND a year earlier. The dad-of-three died in November 2022 after living with the life-limiting neurodegenerative condition for more than six years.
Six people are diagnosed with MND in the UK every day, and there is currently no cure. In line with Doddie’s vision and legacy, the Foundation is dedicated to funding research projects in the hope of identifying effective treatments and one day a cure for MND.
Paul Thompson, Director of Fundraising at My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, said: “It’s well documented that Doddie loved a beer, and it’ll be very special to see the cans featuring the famous yellow and blue tartan on the shelves in Aldi stores.
“Arriving just in time for the Six Nations, every can of Doddie Beir purchased takes us closer to delivering on Doddie’s vision – a world free of MND – and we’re hugely grateful for the support of Aldi and Cold Town Beer as the product is rolled out across Scotland.”
Cold Town Beer’s Doddie Beir and exclusive Hazy IPA are available at all of Aldi’s 112 Scottish stores. Available while stocks last.
