The purpose-built Riverside Museum in Glasgow celebrates the city’s historic global importance in heavy industries such as ship-building, engineering and train manufacturing. From a collection of over 600 ship models, Emily Malcolm, Curator of Transport and Technology for Glasgow Museums, guides us through a large model of RMS Aquitania, one of the most elegant Cunard liners ever to steam across the Atlantic. As we step on board, will we be travelling in first class or steerage?
Emily Malcolm is Curator of Transport and Technology for Glasgow Museums. Based at Riverside Museum, she concentrates on maritime and engineering collections, particularly an internationally important collection of ship models. An alumna of the Universities of Glasgow and St Andrews, Emily’s research seeks to re-focus the interpretation of ship models to highlight their manufacture and use in industry. This work has led to the book Glasgow Museums, The Ship Models (2019).
