Winter Lecture Series: 2nd Battalion of The Argylls – Le Cateau to 3rd Battle of Ypres

About Winter Lecture Series: 2nd Battalion of The Argylls – Le Cateau to 3rd Battle of Ypres

2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders inherited the identity of the old 93rd Highlanders of ‘Thin Red Line’ fame. They took this link very seriously. Based at Fort George in Inverness in the summer 1914, the Battalion was thrust into the reality of a modern European War within a few weeks of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination – a reality which would stretch that unit to its very limits and end in the winter mud around Ypres. This lecture is based on the archive material and accounts of the officers and soldiers who were there as well as examining the ethos, character and people who would serve with it in 1914.

About the Speaker: Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Clark

Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Clark joined the Argylls in 1988 and is still serving with the Royal Regiment of Scotland. He served with the 1st Battalion in Germany and for two operational tours in West Belfast in the 1990s.
