Sewing Bras and Pants with Cass & Lydia

About Sewing Bras and Pants with Cass & Lydia

Have you struggled to find underwear in your size? Do you find that ready to wear bras and bralettes are often unsupportive or overly constricting, or are you just interested in learning the skills to build your ethical wardrobe? Introducing the collaboration of the century … we’re so excited that our resident super stitcher Cassandra Belanger is teaming up with the queen of inclusive fashion, Lydia Morrow to help you create the best fitting and most comfortable underwear you can possibly imagine. Whatever your body shape, come along and craft your perfect matching set, tailored to your own measurements in our first ever Bra and Pants Workshop. Learn to make your own well fitting, comfortable, casual, and supportive underwear with a domestic sewing machine or overlocker.

This course is a step-by-step guide on how to make a comfortable set of undergarments including help troubleshooting common issues like fit and proportions. Talking you through how cup sizes are calculated and how to add additional support to a base pattern, we will also encourage you to explore reusing fabric from retired garments or getting creative with fabric scraps. People of all genders, sizes, and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to attend this course.

In the safe hands of our expert teacher Cassandra and expert bra maker Lydia, students will be introduced to the use of stretch fabrics and elastics, creating undergarments that fit your curves as they should. Learn to personalise the Poppy bra and Median pants, working with different fabrics, adding structure, and choosing a cup-to-band ratio that fits to your own unique shape.

And if you’re shy, don’t worry: There is plenty of space to try on your garments in private!

Please note that this course is a Growing Beginner course, which means that you must have at least a basic level of garment construction experience, having made at least one garment and understand how to use a sewing machine. If you’ve got a couple of projects under your belt, that will probably stand you in good stead. If you’ve never made an item of clothing before, but wish to take this course, you may consider the Sewing Clothes for Beginners Course or some private tuition.

Outcomes:
A basic set of sewing skills; a basic understanding of how to make bras and pants; and the confidence to go on and try more.
A bra and pants made by you, to fit your body and in the fabric and style of your choice.
A sample book, made by you and full of the techniques you’ve learned as part of the course. Use this for future reference.

About Your Tutors:
Lydia Morrow is a knitwear designer who also works across styling, creative direction, and fit consultation. With a special focus on ethical and size inclusive fashion, she brings a unique, joyful and colourful style that is often missing in inclusive fashion. Through her social media presence, she has built a community of people around her values and aesthetic, and is passionate about helping people learn to express themselves as designers through making their own clothes. As a fat, disabled, queer, and neurodivergent woman in business, she aims to challenge norms within the fashion industry, hoping to disrupt intersectional issues in production, supply chain, marketing, and people’s personal relationships with what they wear. You can find Lydia’s best selling patterns on Ravelry.

Cassandra’s work is an invitation to a more sustainable future and education is at the centre of her creative practice. She is the founder of The Stitchery Studio, is Co-founder and Director of the Zero Waste Design Collective and a founding member of Sustainable Fashion Scotland. She is the resident sewing instructor at the Central Scottish School of Craft and a Fashion and Textile Lecturer at Glasgow West College. Her design and teaching practice challenges makers, designers and educators to think through the social and environmental impacts of their practice, exploring issues such as zero waste, intersectionality, transparency, feminism, sizeism, and body image.

Tea and coffee are provided but participants should bring their own lunch and utensils.

All of our classes are suitable for over 16s, younger crafters may be accommodated if accompanied by a participating adult but please contact us before booking
