At Home with King Robert: The 'Private Life' of Robert Bruce.
Much ink has been spilled over the reign of King Robert I, his military escapades, political activities, and his character as a king. Far less attention has been given to his personal interests and pastimes. This is in part due to a lack of sources offering those kinds of insights, and in part because the distinction between 'public' and 'private' life was not as sharply defined for medieval aristocrats as it is for us today. Nevertheless, there are some observations we can make about how Bruce preferred to occupy his time when he was not actively engaged in the armed struggle for Scotland's independence or consolidating his royal authority. This talk will explore what we can reconstruct about the king's tastes and recreational pursuits and what this may tell us about his personality.
The talk will run from 7pm-8pm with doors opening at 6.45pm.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
