Whether you’re a beginner or have some mosaic experience, you’ll learn the essential skills for mosaic signage, from calligraphy choice and design to background andamento and installation.
Friday-Sunday, 13-15 June 2025
In advance of the workshop, Amy will liaise with you to discuss the numbers or lettering you’d like to include, font choices, and design. She’ll discuss size options depending on the simplicity or complexity of your chosen design. (As a guide, the maximum sign size will be approximately 40cm squared / 40cm x 30cm for a rectangle.) You’ll need to decide whether complete your piece for mounting or take it away for installation (if you’re planning to install it directly onto a fixed surface). For your materials, you can choose to use unglazed ceramics or vitreous glass tiles (or a mixture of both). After your discussion, Amy will then create your numbers/lettering font to scale and print it for you to work from at the workshop.
Day 1: Amy will demonstrate the software she uses to create, scale and prepare mosaic signage designs, and to plan andamento (tile flow), so that you know how to do it following the workshop. She’ll also advise you on selecting the right materials for exterior signage – whether they’re wall mounted or floor installations – and teach you about the right tools (nippers / wheeled cutters) for cutting your materials and how to use them. You’ll then begin mosaicking, starting with the lettering.
Day 2: You’ll finish off your lettering (if it’s not already done on day one) and work on the background.
Day 3: If you choose to mount your piece during the workshop, you’ll do this on day 3. Amy will guide you to prepare the substrate, apply cement, and grout. If you’re taking your piece away for installation elsewhere, you can follow along with the demonstration and get instructions, at the same time as finishing off your mosaicking.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to mosaics, or you’re a mosaicist who is looking to expand into mosaic signage work, you’re very welcome. Join us for a creative and informative experience, and you’ll leave with a beautiful, custom mosaic sign!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
