Level: Intermediate
This one-day, intermediate-level class is a perfect next step for jewellers who are already working in wax and want to expand their skills by learning how to carve custom settings for gemstones directly into their designs. Wax carving is a highly versatile technique that allows you to create both organic and geometric forms—often more easily than with traditional metalworking methods. Adding stone settings to your wax models not only elevates your designs but can also save you time and money in production.
During the course, participants will create two simple rings that include settings for 5mm round stones.
You’ll learn:
- How to design and carve a ring shank or pendant with a cabochon setting
- How to design and carve a ring shank with a tube/collet-style setting for a faceted stone
- How to repair breakages in wax
- How to finish your waxes to a professional standard
Time permitting, students may also create an additional small flush or tube setting from flat wax.
This workshop focuses on wax work only. Casting and stone setting will not be completed during the session. You will leave with your finished wax models and instructions on how to send them out for casting in silver independently. Your tutor will explain the lost wax casting process, guide you in setting up an account with a casting company, and walk you through each stage – from submitting your wax to understanding what to expect when your finished cast is returned.
Setting Requirement:
Once you have received your silver ring back from the casting company and refined it, you can set your stone in your own studio, bring it along to finish during your weekly class, or at one of our Thursday afternoon supported sessions. This class is best suited for students who have previous experience working with wax and a basic knowledge of traditional bezel or tube settings in metal.
Your tutor: Shirley Lowe is CSSJ’s expert on all things wax. She teaches our regular weekly classes as well as wax carving workshops. Trading under the name Verdant Jewellery, Shirley tries to find a balance between making the jewellery she loves and protecting the environment around her. She uses recycled metals, pre-loved stones and natural yarns in her work while reducing or removing any harmful chemicals used in the process.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
