Stirling will be awash with conversations about icing, raising ingredients and baking times as Cake Fest rolls into town on 11 September. Promising a fun-filled family day out as teams of amateur and professional bakers from all across Scotland bring their version of some of Scotland’s most iconic and best loved buildings to create a giant edible cake map.
Cake Fest is a headline event of the year-long Festival of Architecture and a key part of the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. Cake makers will be coming from throughout Scotland to show off their culinary designs and range from school groups, businesses, charities and groups of friends. Ambitious bakers have taken on the challenge of creating some of Scotland’s best known buildings and structures including the Scottish Parliament, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glasgow School of Art, Stirling Castle, the Scott Monument, The Falkirk Wheel, Dumfries House and Dunnottar Castle and many, many more! There are still some cake buildings up for grabs and there is a full list of what’s still available on www.foa2016.com/cakefest
The event takes place on the grounds of the beautiful Cowane’s Hospital in the centre of the city and the surrounding area will be buzzing with street theatre from the fabulous Cake Ladies and Tea Club, food tours, live music, architectural crazy golf, storytelling, architectural installations plus cake making workshops and once the map has been unveiled and judged – the eating can commence – organisers expect there will be over 10,000 slices of cake to be devoured!
Special treats just for kids include the making of mini-icing sculptures for the map - cars, buses, ice-cream vans, boats, cows and more, even a Loch Ness Monster!
Timings for the day are as follows:
• 10am Event opens, we begin laying out the map and cakes start to arrive and are placed individually on display
• Noon Workshop activity and street theatre begins
• 1pm All the cakes have arrived and are on display, cakes begin to move onto the map
• 3.30pm Cake map is finished and voting (by bakers) plus judging begins
• 4pm Awards presented
• 4.50pm Cakes cut and shared
Cake Fest Scotland will be taking place during a busy weekend in Stirling and there will be loads going on throughout the city including Bloody Scotland, Doors Open Day and Shindig and huge crowds are expected and organisers are urging visitors to allow time for travel.
