They might have been cooped up indoors for months, but the cast of Rubber Chicken Theatre haven’t been idle.
Back in January the Dunblane based social enterprise, hatched a plan to perform four shows online this spring, giving everyone - from preschoolers to pensioners - the opportunity to take part in their crazy challenge regardless of experience or location.
Over 130 people from Dunblane to Denmark jumped at the chance to participate in remote, fully staged performances of Little Shop of Horrors, Annie, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and Chess.
Less than four months on and nearly 15,000 video recordings later, the performing arts company is set to unveil its spring theatre season this week: streaming from Thursday 22 April – Saturday 1 May.
Artistic Director Pamela Mackie explained: “With venues closed to the public until at least the summer, we wanted to create opportunities for performers of all ages and from all over the globe to get back ‘on stage’.
“Rehearsing and recording remotely has been a steep learning curve for everyone involved, not to mention the mammoth task of editing nearly 15,000 home videos together!
“Our incredible cast have tackled man-eating plants, rampaging zombies, an alcoholic orphanage owner and some tongue twisting Russian names to bring these four shows to life!”
Known locally for their popular show in a week production and much-loved Christmas pantomime, Rubber Chicken Theatre like a challenge.
Last February the company broke the Guinness World Record for the Fastest Theatrical Production and during lockdown they have continually looked for ways to ensure the show can go on. Performing Into the Woods to a socially distant audience last August on Holmehill in Dunblane, as well as staging Halloween and Christmas illuminated performance trails and hosting a virtual Burns Supper.
Pamela added: “The performing arts sector has been hit hard by the pandemic, but we’ve found innovative ways to weather the storm. By going digital we’ve created opportunities for over 130 people to take part, some of whom have never stepped on a stage before. So, we’re staying positive and looking forward to a hopefully not too distant future when we can all get back to performing live. In the meantime, we hope families enjoy watching our spring theatre season from the comfort of their sofa.”
