Eco Metal Masterclass – Recycling Precious Metals

About Eco Metal Masterclass – Recycling Precious Metals

As increasingly more makers and designers are looking for ways to make their practice more sustainable and less impactful to the environment, CSSJ will host an ‘Eco Metal’ workshop dedicated to learning skills and methods needed to recycle gold, silver and other metals. With very little equipment, it is possible to melt down pieces of precious metal and turn them into fabulous cast pieces of jewellery within a home studio environment! This workshop will focus on charcoal ingots and granulation with students leaving the workshop with a unique cast ring. Other ingot mould processes will also be explored so that makers can learn how to fabricate wire and sheet for future use. Our tutors will provide expert guidance on what metals can be successfully recycled and will discuss impurities, metal melting equipment and techniques used to get the most out of your old or scrap metal pieces

Level: This workshop is suitable for jewellery makers at intermediate level and above with torch experience. This is a skills and samples focussed workshop for those who can translate these new techniques in to their own practice.
What to bring: Participants are invited to bring their own clean metal scraps from their workshops or old hallmarked jewellery suitable for melting down.

More information on what metal to bring to the workshop will be issued nearer the time. Please bring along glasses if you need them and wear appropriate clothing for a studio environment including closed-toe shoes. If you have long hair please tie it back.
