We will be welcoming Dr Callum Watson on Monday the 5th of June. Callum graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2016 with a PhD thesis entitled 'Attitudes Towards Chivalry in Barbour's Bruce and Hary's Wallace'. Callum currently works as a Battle Coordinator at the Battle of Bannockburn.
'Sir Robert the douchty king': A life of Robert Bruce (1274-1329)
Robert Bruce, or King Robert I of Scotland, is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated figures in Scotland's history. Beyond his famous - and unlikely - victory at Bannockburn, his energetic military leadership and extensive reshaping of Scottish political community had a resounding impact on the kingdom's outlook and fortunes for well over a century after his death. Yet his rise to power was not without controversy, and his legacy was hotly contested in the years following his death. This paper will seek to examine Bruce's life and career, seeking to explain his remarkable success, explore the limits of his achievements, and understand why he remains such a compelling - if sometimes contentious - figure.
The lecture will run from 7pm-8pm at The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre with doors opening at 6.45pm.
