We’ll spend day one designing pattern motifs exploring, continuous repeats in a border pattern, a rotating quarter tile and/or a full tile pattern. You’ll use hand tools to carve these into lino and then print your pattern onto a set of four napkins or a piece of fabric, which can be used for your future sewing or crafting projects. On the second day we’ll explore how repeated geometric shapes can create a myriad of pattern options. We’ll design motifs within geometric shapes, carve these into lino, and then select complimentary or contrasting colours to print with. Once you’ve finished experimenting and exploring you can use your favourite combinations to print your selected pattern onto a set of two pillowcases or a piece of fabric.
Over two days we’ll explore how the eye is attracted to different kinds of pattern. While the brain finds simple repetition soothing, intricate patterns are very stimulating. It is this push and pull that makes pattern design interesting. And it’s when we get to print with our hands that the magic really happens.
This is a great workshop to do if you have been to the Indian block printing & Lino Workshop, however, it is not a pre-requisite, and no previous experience is necessary.
All materials and tools are included in the cost of this workshop. If you would like to bring additional items to upcycle and print onto, you are welcome to do so, however keep in mind that the inks we use are only suitable for natural fibres like cotton and linen. After your workshops your printed items will need to be heat set at home with an iron, before washing (instructions will be provided).
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
