About Winter Talk: The 91st’s Service in the South African (Boer) War 1899-1902

The 91st’s association with South Africa ran for over a century. This talk will look at the origins of the Boer War, the build-up to a protracted conflict against a highly manoeuvrable partisan force and the series of notable setbacks that followed – including the costly battles of Magersfontein, Modder River and Paaderburg. Whilst the British Army did not cover itself in glory, and many of the actions remain controversial, there were some remarkable achievements by the 91st.

About the Speaker:
A K Miller returns once again to speak in the Winter Talks series. He has had a life-long fascination with South Africa and its history. Having retired he was responsible for the Museum’s redevelopment and since 2021 has been Chairman of the Museum Trust.
