Rooted in centuries of decorative textile tradition, Goldwork is one of the most luxurious forms of embroidery, historically associated with regalia, ecclesiastical dress, and ceremonial garments. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to work with metallic threads and embellishments to create richly textured, light-catching designs that honour heritage craftsmanship while speaking to contemporary sensibilities.
Guided by Chloe’s expertise, you’ll explore traditional Goldwork techniques including felt padding for raised surfaces, working with leather, outline couching using pearl purl, chipping with bright check, S-ing Goldwork, and couching with Japanese thread. Each technique brings its own unique texture and dimension, allowing you to experiment and combine elements to create a small but striking sampler or detailed motif, working from the templates provided.
This workshop is part of our commitment to preserving endangered heritage skills by supporting makers who carry them forward with a modern creative voice. Whether you’re looking to deepen your embroidery practice or explore new avenues in textile embellishment, this class offers a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
Ideal as a follow-on for those who’ve already attended Chloe’s Embroidered Embellishments workshop—or as a beautifully complementary course if you’re planning to take it in the future (opening soon for bookings in the new year!). Combine the two for truly bedazzling results. This class is perfect for newcomers to embroidery as well as those who want to improve their skills and add extra techniques to their stitching repertoire.
