Level: Competent Beginner / Intermediate
This course is designed for beginner to intermediate students who have some experience of jewellery making and want to deepen their technical skills. You should have prior experience with saw piercing and soldering, and be confident in these skills.
Join us for a masterclass in Brooch Making, focusing on Pin and Clasp Mechanisms. One of the challenges of making a good brooch is to find a solution for the fitting. In this ‘next-step’ jewellery making course, you will refine your existing skills and elevate your craftsmanship, focusing on fabricating professional-quality pins and clasps. Ideal for makers with prior experience in metalwork, this course sidesteps decorative design to explore the engineering and precision required for secure, functional brooch fittings. Under expert guidance, you will work from concept to completion, creating variations of brooch backs that integrate thoughtful design with mechanical integrity. Emphasis will be placed on constructing custom pins and clasps that are both discreet and durable.
Among the different categories of jewellery, such as rings, pendants and bracelets, the brooch stands out, as unlike others, it cannot be worn directly on the body. Although they are undoubtedly a form of adornment, historically, brooches have been used as fasteners – attaching clothes to the human body. Beyond simple functionality, brooches have also been inextricably linked to representations of power and status. Today, brooches have been adopted by public-facing women as a means to communicate what cannot be so directly vocalised – a well-chosen brooch can be used to send powerful messages of intention without saying a word.
You’ll also revisit techniques such as hard soldering, precise fitting, metal tempering, and finishing methods to ensure both aesthetic cohesion and long-term wearability.
Techniques covered:
Practical considerations for brooch fittings (weight, balance, wearability)
Which commercial brooch fittings should be avoided and why
Crafting different clasp types
Precision soldering and fine finishing techniques
Troubleshooting common issues with pin alignment and tension
